Full-Contact Traditional Japanese Karate

Genjōkōan coined by Eihei Dōgen Zenji (永平道元禅師), means "Actualization of Reality"; i.e., the word Genjōkōan refers to the unity of practice, realization, and true reality manifesting as the present moment; it is also the title of the first chapter of Dōgen‘s literary work Shōbōgenzō (正法眼蔵) that presents precisely and concretely Dōgen's basic philosophy that one should approach every activity as Bodhisattva (awakened being) practice.

Hence, Genjōkōan Karate, which emphasizes one’s perception of reality to be Zen (in the moment); known as one’s Original Face or True Nature. This realization assists one in any endeavor, e.g., in life or marital arts. When one is calm/balanced or in the Middle Way, one can react innately to a situation without one’s ego intruding. Our Honbu Dōjō's 本部道場 (Headquarter School's) motto is Shikan Suetto スエット or Just Sweat!

Therefore, the foundation or essence of this style is to cultivate oneself in the Zen/Buddhist’s Ways and transcend that into a becoming a Karateka (空手家) or practitioner of Karate/practitioner of the Way or Do ("Doh," meaning path or road, akin to one's journey). This is achieved via patience, respect, appreciation, dedication, perseverance, and exemplifying Daishin (大進)  or Magnanimous Mind.

Goals, aspirations, or desires are good for one as long as one does not get consumed by them. Desire in the Middle Way (the Two Truths) or balanced way is beneficial to oneself, but when one obsesses, it then becomes ego driven or based in one's abstract mind (non-reality) and thus, one manifests delusion or fabrication, which is a contradiction to the life of Buddhism (仏教) and Zen (禅).

We must forget or let go of our Ego-laden views or discriminatory mind, i.e., comparison, competition, desire, and individuality. Rather, we need to become one with each other (Interconnectedness) and demonstrate Universality with or of all sentient beings, i.e., living beings, which encompasses everything.

Greed, lust, envy, jealously, hate, anger leads one down a dark and insular path of individuality instead of universality due to self-attachment or ego. Takuan Sōhō (沢庵 宗彭), a famous Buddhist Monk (僧侶) who mentored Rōnins (浪人) (Fuedal Contracted Samurais), such as Miyamoto Musashi (宮本 武蔵), Yagyū Munenori (柳生 宗矩), and Yamamoto Tsunetomo (山本 常朝) writes, "It is the very mind itself, that leads the mind astray. Of the mind, do not be mindless" (44). ~ The Unfettered Mind; i.e., one can lead oneself off course just by believing it (or ruminating on it), so instead, use good intentions and manifest clear, balanced thinking, which only comes from practicing Zazen (坐禅), because practice and enlightenment are one in the same; there is not duality or separation. This is achieved with one’s dedication and one’s patience.
